Air Control – Avoiding Your Biggest Enemy

Keeping air out of your auto taper system is essential for smooth operation. Air bubbles can cause tape misalignment and inconsistent mud flow.

Tip: Never transfer your pump to another bucket – just keep topping it up

Tip: Always prime your pump and keep the gooseneck full to avoid air pockets

Left or Right Hand Use

Why it matters: The way you hold and control the taper can impact how the tape is applied. Understanding how the tape feeds based on your dominant hand can make a huge difference.

Tip: If you use your left hand forward, the tape should feed one way. If you use your right hand forward, it feeds the opposite way.

Mud Consistency for the Auto Taper

Why it matters: The thickness of your mud affects how smoothly it runs through the taper. If it’s too thick, it will clog; if it’s too thin, it won’t adhere properly.

Tip: “This is how thin I mix it. That is a full two litre bottle of water for bucket. Any thicker will give you problems.”

Gary’s comments: “Filling the taper. I tried the side fill, but it’s not for me. The gooseneck doesn’t really present any drama to me and it also gives you somewhere to sit the taper.”

Handling Tight Spaces

Body Position & Tool Angles

A correct stance and tool positioning reduce fatigue and improve efficiency.

How to hold the taper and position yourself (make sure to listen to the audio).

Running the taper at an angle – Dropping the taper’s back end for one-wheel operation. First thing to note is that the taper is not held at 90 degrees to the join. By dropping the back of the tool it allows you to run on one wheel. This is a really good habit to get into. For one it is less fatigue on the body. And secondly it makes it easier to wipe the tape. And thirdly failure to do this on ceilings results in lots of dropping mud. The next thing to note is you need to come to a complete stop before cutting.

Upright angles – “Upright angles are the only time I break the cardinal rule of the auto taper (don’t advance the tape if the wheels are not turning). In my view it has its advantages in this case. When you roll the tape the action of the roller and the effect of gravity will put mud behind the tape at the bottom. By doing this way there is less mud spewing out the bottom and less mess.”

Cutting Tape Effectively

Stopping cleanly before cutting the tape is crucial to preventing errors.

“Demonstrating how to and where to make your cut with the @tapepro automatic taper. It is imperative that you come to a complete stop before making your cut. Around 70mm is the sweet spot from the corner.”

“Here is a slowed down look of running the taper into and out of corners. The steps:”

  • Step 1: Come to a complete stop.
  • Step 2: Cut the tape.
  • Step 3: As you roll forward, advance the tape.
  • Step 4: Continue down the wall.

Advancing the Tape Smoothly

Ensuring tape is properly advanced while maintaining mud flow.
“One way to advance the tape and still keep the mud flowing is to run the taper on the wall as you advance the tape.”
Preventing wrinkles in tape — keeping tape straight during application.
How to handle stop-starts. “In the first example the @tapepro super lite taper doesn’t leave the wall; in the second one it obviously does. The first technique is definitely worth practising — the time saving is real.”

“Wiping tape behind the Tapepro SuperLite taper with the Wallboard Tools skimming blade. The reduced mud flow of this taper makes a huge difference. This joint is 6.5m long — if you tried this with a taper that has the usual amount of mud flow there would be mud everywhere.”

“The system?
Auto taper using @csrgyprock Easyflow A/P mud.
Roll with the tapepro roller. Just a light roll on the first pass to centre the tape.
Then glaze — use the 75mm glazer.
This completes the taping process.
Once dry they get a quick sand and blow down.
Then topped.”

We ran two 76m rolls in and had zero issues. That’s a thumbs up from me.”

Testing Base 90 compound vs. all-purpose.
“I usually run all purpose through my taper, but yesterday decided to give base 90 a go. Did I enjoy the process? No not really. It ran through the taper quite fine, but the tape is certainly not as slick to wipe. Taped out two houses near each other so that meant more wash down than usual. Three wash downs in total. One for the walls and ceilings in each house. Then I taped the angles with AP so another wash down at the end of the day.”

“My lubrication process for the @tapepro auto taper. I am using the @wurthaustralia silicone spray it is the only one I have found that doesn’t contain any solvents. There may be others that are good to use but this is the best stuff I have found so far.”
“Like anything mechanical the taper requires lubricating. I use silicone spray on every moving part. I know of one bloke that would leave the head of his bazooka soaking in automatic transmission fluid between jobs. The point is it will run heaps smoother if it’s lubricated.”
